Parish Administrator (Part-time)
The Parish of St Stephen’s and St Thomas’ in Shepherd’s Bush is looking to recruit a Parish Administrator to coordinate our Sunday and midweek worship activities.
Closing Date: 9am 18th August 2021
Main Purpose of the Role
At St Stephen’s we want church to be a place where people have fun, experience belonging, and encounter God. We want to provide spaces on Sunday mornings where worship, teaching, and sacraments are a key part of our exploration of faith. We are currently nurturing a congregation of people some of whom have not experienced God’s love for themselves. Ultimately we want our church family to discover, develop in, and embody what it means to be loved by God.
The purpose of this crucial role is to supervise and facilitate the day-to-day administrative operations of the church in close cooperation with the Vicar and staff team. This position requires an exceptional degree of professionalism and integrity combined with the ability to work in an ever-changing environment, where multi-tasking, sound decision-making, self-motivation, and discretion are essential. Equally the post-holder will need confident and proven organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
As a faith-based organization and place of Christian worship, our beliefs are foundational to everything we do. The post-holder will be expected to share these beliefs, join in the church's spiritual life, and work actively to support our ministry and vision.
We are looking for a Parish Administrator to join our team on a part-time basis to:
Provide effective administration support to the Vicar and staff team.
Be a key face and voice of the church for the wider community.
Encourage and develop volunteers in administration and serving on Sunday mornings.
Be a key liaison between Church Hall users and the Vicar and staff team.
Church Context
The local community of Shepherd’s Bush is extremely diverse economically, ethnically, and culturally. Within the parish, there are elements of extreme affluence alongside high levels of social deprivation. The area is noted for its vibrancy.
The church shares a name, plot, and vision with a local Church of England primary school where a large proportion of the worshipping community choose to send their children. The school often uses both the church building and the church hall.
Both the church hall and the church building are rented out to regular users. We currently have approximately seven regular users in the church or hall weekly who have ongoing bookings. Our vision for this role is that the Parish Administrator will oversee these bookings and act as the direct link between regular users and the vicar. In addition to regular users, there are also one-off users, these will also be managed by the Parish Administrator.
On Sunday morning we have two services, a traditional one at 9:30 a.m. and a more charismatic service at 11:00 a.m., at both services currently the ratio of children and adults attending is 50:50. When Sunday mornings return to “normal” we expect to be welcoming between 60 and 70 adults per Sunday and approximately 60 children into three different children’s groups. We require the Parish Administrator to work at the 9:30 a.m. traditional service and be present, as far as possible, in the crossover of the two services. This is largely to facilitate the school admission forms and encourage volunteers to participate in the service. Our preference is for our Parish Administrator to also worship at St Stephen’s but this is not a prerequisite.
We are committed to living the mission of Jesus Christ with openness, acknowledging diversity, welcoming participation, and seeking to serve humbly as we aim to be authentic and relevant in our obedience to God’s Word and the direction of His Spirit.
